The new semester has fired up its engines and finished Round 1 of 14 already! Hope everyone had a great summer holiday and is all geared up for what´s to come.
Speaking of what´s to come, I´ve got news for ya: City Race is just around the corner!
For all of you who have just started off at POTE, the City Race is one of the biggest events of the semester, if not the year! Groups of students spanning all ages and origins form groups that wander through and around the city from one of many stations, set up by the 4th years, to the next, completing fun and alcoholic games as theyx go along. Points are docked for each group based on its performance and a winner is declared by the end of the festivities/ at the afterparty.
Trust me, it´s a whole lotta fun you don´t want to miss! Details will be provided on here as the week rolls on, so stay tuned to the bulletin for more information!
Wishing y´all a good week 2 in the halls n rooms of POTE!
Your JDK

ETR Grand Opening

<dc:subject>News Bulletin</dc:subject>

Hey y´all,
The ETR will open its virtual gates for exam registrations on Saturday, May 9th, at 8.00 o´clock in the morning! I know this is within reasonable weekend wake-up range, so don´t be surprised if the ETR doesn´t let you log in, or only runs very slowly. Furthermore, I warn you; experiences of fellow students have shown that the more students are on the ETR, the more likely the system is to mess up your dates, so your choices are to either be patient and wait an hour or so before logging on, or dare to navigate the crowded ETR. I strongly suggest making screenshots whenever you register for an exam, as the departments show no mercy if you´re booked incorrectly, unless you have physical proof that you signed up for anotehr exam and that the ETR misinformed you. The August Exam Period is ILLEGAL, which is why POTE will no longer offer it. EGSC Presidents Livingston and Zuhorn, along with many other helpers, gave their best to bring it back, but with a law officially outlawing the AEP, there is no hope left.
Here´s some good news, though:)
Both the Biochemistry and Medical Chemistry Dept.s are offering Saturday school for students that failed 1st Semester Chem or Biochem. The courses start March 21st, so make sure you sign up in time! Furthermore, things are in motion to have summer courses in the same subjects,so that you can avoid trailing behind a year by passing Chem/ Biochem 1 on Saturday School, and taking Chem/ Biochem 2 during the summer. I´m going to give you a brief summary of good-to-know info that was passed around tonight and alert you to some things that are up to you to take care of. I know the event is two weeks out, but we are expecting 800 people to attend,so we need to make sure this goes down like clockwork:
- in the days before the Event, take some time during your breaks to pay some attention to your surroundings. See any litter, empty bottles, cups, general trash? Be so kind to throw it away,so we can get the university as clean and presentable as possible for the International Evening:)

- We urge each of you to get together with some friends and to think of some kind of short performance that you could put on stage at the Evening to show off something typical about your country and to entertain the hundreds of people that are going to attend this event. Last event was an absolute blast in this category, so lets see if we can keep that up, or even get better :D If you have an idea and would like to perform, contact Greta on her cell: 06-70-223-4846

-TICKETS: for food and drinks will go on sale Tuesday in the German and English Reigstrars Offices. They cost 400 Forints each. Do not wait to the last moment to get them, they`ll be going faster than ice cream on a Hungarian summer day! Remember that entry to the International Evening is 100% F-R-E-E!

- Cafe Lemen is going to set up a cocktail bar on the 1st floor to provide you with drinks that night. Here you can make your semester active or passive, and you can change some of your personal details. Between the steps, there may be checking processes going on, which determine if the previous step was successful or not, and allow you to go on to the next one or not.

Your student’s legal status
Your student’s legal status is one of the most important factors of your studies; this determines if you can take courses or not. These updates are by far the most extensive updates to BRY's corner to this date, and it has taken me more hours of work than I'm willing to admit.

First and foremost. I've redesigned the basic layout of all the pages of my corner to provide better access to their contents. After thoroughly reassessing the utilization of the empty spaces and closely monitoring the pattern of usage of my corner this past year, I personally feel that the new layout harness the capabilities of this web site to it's fullest. Though you are bound to be the final judges in this matter, I hope that the new design will give you an even better user experience when spending some time at BRY's Corner in the future.

Furthermore. I've designed brand new cover pages for most of the third year exam notes that I'm currently providing here at this web site, and updated the preview images on their respective pages as well as the exam notes themselves to feature these cover pages. Though these cover pages are not essential to the learning process, I would still like to believe that they heighten the experience of picking up a fresh set of my exam notes for the first time.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I've at long last made my pharmacology third semester exam notes available for download. This has been a highly requested set of exam notes both from you as students here at Pécs Medical School as well as from the students studying outside the borders of Hungary, and I'm proud to finally be able to present this set of exam notes to you.

I hope that these updates properly illustrate how grateful I am for all the success you've bought me this past year, and I hope that they will further aid you in your quest of becoming the best possible medical professionals.

Yours sincerely,
Brynjar Saunes Bye

One Year of BRY's Exam Notes

<dc:subject>News Bulletin</dc:subject>

Last week BRY's Corner celebrated it's first year in existence. As I now take some time and look back to when I first launched my corner as a permanent addition to this web site, I'm blown away by the unbelievable success this past year has brought both to me as an individual and to this web site as a whole.

When I first made the decision to take my exam notes public, my goal was to deliver 1000 sets of exam notes within the first year. Whoa was I wrong :-) Since the first set of exam notes appeared on this web site in late March last year, more than 10.000 sets of my exam notes have been downloaded by you as medical students. That is an actual download rate exceeding my original expectations tenfold!

From a technical point of view, these 10.000 sets of exam notes downloaded translates to more than 150 gigabytes of data having been transfered from our servers to your respective computers. That equals a staggering 200 CDs choked full of information being delivered to you as medical students this past year alone!

In addition to this. Since my corner first appeared on this web site, my exam notes have been climbing steadily on the Google ranks to reach the virtually unattainable position of top ranked earlier this year. That is, if you search for any of the exam notes I am currently providing at this web site, my exam notes will be the very first hit on the Google results page in close to every single last case. Most large corporations use hundreds of thousands of dollars over several years just to get within the first 10 hits on the Google results page, and for me as a private person to reach the pole position is absolutely astounding!

And if that was not enough. When I first sat down to write my exam notes as well as when I decided to make my exam notes available here at this web site, I was doing it exclusively for you as students here at Pécs Medical School. But during the past 12 months, my exam notes have found their way into the hands of hundreds of medical students all over the world. Right now students in Australia, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, India, Romania, South Africa and the United States of America, just to mention a few, are using my exam notes on a daily basis to pass their respective exams in their home countries. I'm startled about the sheer amount of medical students outside this university having a hard-copy of my exam notes lying around, and the success these students have experienced by using my exam notes in the preparation for their individual exams continues to amaze me!

On behalf of myself I would like to thank all of you who have assisted in making this possible, and wish you the very best of luck in all of your exams to come.

Yours sincerely,
Brynjar Saunes Bye

Contacting the Student Council

<dc:subject>News Bulletin</dc:subject>

Earlier this year we brought you the unfortunate news that we were experiencing some problems with the contact forms here at this web site. They will draft a letter stating their concerns over this decision and we shall do the same. Our letters together will join the pleads of the other universities in efforts to reach a compromise concerning reinstatement of the August exam period.

What we ask of you...
Please reply to this email with your position on this topic. Write clearly why and how the August exam period is beneficial for you. I will collect these statements and add them to my letter next week. The Hungarian students are doing the same.

The current solution...
Prof. Csernus issued a faculty statement this afternoon in response to the growing frustrations. He has officially added an extra week to the June exam period. So the summer exam period will end July 4th, giving seven weeks total.

So this is where we stand now. I will update you with more information when it comes in. Please reply to president.egsc@hotmail.com with your opinion/statement concerning the August exam period by Thursday, December 20th.

Best regards. For those of you already acquainted with the event YES! IT'S TIME FOR CITY RACE!

Allow me to break it down for the freshmen/women: City Race is an early event that normally takes place in the beginning of the school year. It is basically a welcoming party for the 1st years organized by the students in the 4th year. It is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, get acquainted with some of the most popular places to hang out in town and just have a blast. City Race is so called because the students run around town from location to location (bar, restaurant, square, park, ...) and in each post they are supposed to compete against the opposing teams. At the end of the day, everybody just gets together and dance the night away.

Do buy yours ticket at POTE throughout next week and do not hesitate to join - especially 1st years, as we have a little surprise for you...

Christmas Comes Early This Year...

<dc:subject>News Bulletin</dc:subject>

...for the third year students, that is :-D

BRY's third year exam notes are now FINALLY being made available for download. The students attending this medical school alone did not justify this amount, and we soon thereafter initiated an investigation to properly elucidate the exact locations from where these downloads were being requested. Our investigation has payed off, and we are thrilled to let you know that we have evolved from a local curiosity to a worldwide phenomenon. We are now serving students on 4 continents with more than 40% of the downloaded exam notes being requested by medical students from Northern America, Australia and Japan. Many students studying in their respective continents have already written us to thank us for our completely free initiative in assisting the future generation of medical doctors, and we would really like to hear even more from you as students OUTSIDE Pécs Medical School. In the past students did not have to register for summer practices in advance, only they brought us a paper about completion of the practice and the fact was entered to the ETR. In the credit system you have to register for summer practices (just as you have to do with e.g. Physical Education) at the beginning of the semester, together with the other subjects. This information was not obvious for the most of the students, so Prof. Csernus granted an opportunity for the students: ONLY THIS SEMESTER you can officially complete your summer practice without having been registered into the ETR. Bring the paper at the end of the semester and we will register you. Agre. Eleven aquaporins and aquaglyceroporins (combined referred to as aqua(glycero)porins) have been described in mammals. Aqua(glycero)porins are represented in all classes of organisms, suggesting universal importance. Aquaporins transport water and aquaglyceroporins transport glycerol with high velocity and specificity. Mammalian AQP1, 2, 4, 5, and 8 are aquaporins, AQP3, 7, 9 and 10 are aquaglyceroporins. AQP6 is an intracellular aquaporin able to conduct ions. The physiological roles of aquaporins are known to different degrees of detail.
AQP1 is required for production of cerebrospinal fluid in the human brain. AQP4 is an aquaporin of the brain-blood barrier and involved in brain swelling. Central to the understanding of the role and importance of aqua(glycero)porins is their regulation at the level of gene expression (e.g. AQP9), trafficking (AQP2), gating (AQP6), or combinations thereof.
Aquaporins are targets for drugs. If executed, you as students will probably have to sign up for the test some days in advance. This is a wish from the biochemistry department, since they wish to have a test which is fair for the students and at the same time not having to do extra work for those students who do not show an effort. As said, this is a bonus test, and participation is therefore voluntary. Absence will give no penalty.

Two sets of questions will be given out during the semester for your answering. We are pleased to inform you that the English and German Student councils have now merged. All of you are part of a larger, more powerful student body appropriately called the English-German Student Council (EGSC). We apologize for not informing you fully of this change while it was in progression. Our main reason for this was that we desired to accomplish this sensitive transition in the least possible time.

We have successfully fused the two bodies with minimum friction between the German and English leadership. There is also a change in the make up of the new student council. There are more executive positions in the new student council, which have been filled under mutual discussion with the German and English student council leaders. We agree that it may be unorthodox to give such positions undemocratically however we hope you realize that this was the only possible way for a smooth transfer. The present posts in the student council are provisional. In the future we hope to have a stable functioning body which can make these decisions democratically.

An orientation meeting will be held on Tuesday 20th February 2007 at 18:00hrs in Lecture room 1. So keep that in mind, be a good student and citizen, and do what you must do. And by the way, a belated Merry Xmas and an upcoming Happy New Year.

Hi,

Seems Biophysics mid-semester grades drive everyone crazy.

Let's make it clear:

"mid-semester grades" are to express a students overall achievements during the instruction period. It is given as a kind of average (the exact method is determined by the department) of your tests and assignments and presentations you had to complete during the instruction period.
Actually this type of grade was called "progress grade" in the old Code of Studies, but in the new one it was given this name which I find very unfortunate.
Mid-semester grades are to be entered into the gradebook (contrary to the above mentioned assignments, presentations and test that really happen in the instruction period = "mid semester"...).
Everything happens to be entered into your gradebook should be entered into the ETR as well. To make it possible, for grades we create "exam sheets" (list of students’ name on one exam date in one subject, where the examiners can write in the grades given). So eg. in Chemistry those General medicine students who wish take their semester exams on the 19th January will sign up to the exam sheet for Chemistry January 19. This sheet is available for the students to sign up (using the ETR), and for the examiners to download it. At the exam the examiner will fill in the grade not only into your gradebook but on the printed exam sheet as well, as a duplicate or a minutes of the exam. The grades given at the exam and written also on the exam sheet will be entered into the ETR until the next working day by the department, so you and the Office and the department can see it in the system. The department keeps a copy of this sheet and sends the original sheet to the Registrar's Office. At the end of the exam period the Registrar’s Office (=RO) collects the gradebooks back from the students and matches the gradebook entries and the exam sheets.

department gives exam dates – RO enters them into ETR – students sign up for exam in ETR – department download exam sheet from ETR – student takes exam – examiner gives grade and writes it to gradebook at the end of the exam – department enters results to ETR – student can sign up for the next exam date (retake) if needed

A student can sign up for only one exam date at a time in one subject. That means if you signed up for the 17th, you can only sign up for the next exam date only if the grade given at the 17th exam is entered into the computer. It is important in case of retake exams.

Ok, let's get back to Biophysics and the other mid-semester grade subjects.
Mid-semester exams are special grades. They evaluate the semester's achievement just like semester exams and final exams, so they differ from the test etc. taken in the instruction period. They should be given on the last day of the instruction period (that will be the exam date). They are the A chance in that subject, and - at least in this semester - retakes can be taken during the exam period if the departments gave dates.

In case of mid-semester exams:
RO creates an exam sheet for the last day of the instruction period (15 Dec.) – RO puts everyone’s name (who took up the subject in the ETR at the beginning of semester) on this exam sheet: no one can sign off this sheet! – department fills in the results in the ETR – students can sign up for retake exams (if dates are given by department)

The specific Biophysics problem:
I talked to the Dept. of Biophysics, and they said that the problem is that they discuss the grades with you on your last practice. And you have practices even on Friday. So they planned to enter the grades to the ETR only on Monday morning. But in this case those intending to take their B chance on 18th of December wouldn't be able to sign up for this date (you know the deadline is 2 WORKING DAYS before, until 9 o'clock!). So we agreed with the department on the following:
- they enter the grades known at the moment into the ETR on Thursday morning, and if any of the grades changes they will correct it until Monday
- since you gave Marius a list of the exam applications in Biophysics, we can use them as a list of B chances. So after the department entered the mid-semester grades (A chances) - probably Thursday morning - I'll be able to put all the names to the desired exam date. Those satisfied with their A chance grades simply have to cancel the B chance date then, and the rest still can change their B chance dates if needed.

Exam Period... here we go again

<dc:subject>News Bulletin</dc:subject>

Welcome to the exam period! That material is copyrighted (not by the departments, but by the books from where the material was taken from) - at least that was what was communicated to me by the university's administration. So, I'm terribly sorry, but you will have to continue exchanging this "illegal" material the same good old fashioned way, at the least for now.

All notes posted on this website were written by students. Funny enough, even though most of the students based their notes on copyrighted books, it is ok to have them online (there goes their argument down the drain - but we don't want any trouble, now do we?!?). However, and here is the catch, these notes are only accessible by a password system. Each year and its corresponding notes will have an individual password (trust me, once you've gotten one of them, you'll have them all figured out), and this password can be obtained from your group leader.

Up to know, notes have been posted for 1st year (Anatomy and Biophysics), 3rd year (Microbiology), 3rd/4th years (Pharmacology, Public Health) and 4th year (Derma, ENT and Hema - last 2 probably from Budapest, haven't looked at them, maybe interesting).

Hope you find some of them useful. It's basically whatever has been typed on computer. We are now in negotiations with a photocopy place that might be willing to scan written notes for a reasonable price. But that will (maybe, only maybe) come next semester.

If you have any notes in a digital format that you want to share with your year, please e-mail them to jmvinagre@gmail.com, and I'll have them posted. The week in question will now be used for registration for the next semester. 1st semester exam period will thus extend from Dec. 18th to Jan. 26th. There will thus be 6 valid weeks available for sitting for exams. Whether this change affects the exam dates distributed by some departments for the 7th week, we don't know as of yet.

The Dean's chance (D-exam) no longer exists. However, there will be a "replacement D-exam" in its place. If the A, B and C chances have all been wasted, one has the right to sit for a D-exam if, and only if, there is a free spot on an already existing date, within the exam period. No D-exam will be held outside the exam period.

With these two changes made, the combined effect may cause some students to loose as much as 2 - 3 weeks of "exam studiyng"; not to mention the changes many students may have to accomodate in their exam schedules. In effect, one thing all of us can do to prevent being negatively affected by these changes is to plan on studying more subjects simultaneously before the exam period starts.

WE HAVE ONLY LEARNED ABOUT THESE CHANGES IN TONIGHT'S MEETING.

As far as we know, the changes have been made by the Faculty Council of Pecs University. This Faculty council is made up of select professors responsible for educational matters. We do have the oppurtnity to send a representative to these meetings. We have not been notified about any of the latter and have thus not been able to influence in any decision making.

Apparently the motion to take away/change the D-exam was voted for and accepted in June! In none of all of the Student Council's numerous meetings with different representatives from the faculty was this mentioned. On all of these meetings we have always stressed the need for better communication between the student body and the faculty. We consider this delay in information to be a serious lack of willingness to communicate properly with the students of this medical school.

We have concluded that the best solution is through an organized movement which will bring together and activally involve the English, Hungarian and German student bodies. To achieve this, we request your utmost cooperation and your views, therefore we are calling an open meeting to all English program students to be held on this Wednesday, the 15th of November, at 6 o'clock pm. The venue will be provided to you as soon as we get access to a lecture hall, so please be on the lookout for any sort of posting.

These changes seem to be in part associated with a pan-european process of uniformization of higher education studies, specifically in countries of the EU. We are aware that several student bodies in universities throughout Europe have already revolted against various changes introduced by the so-called treaty of Bologne, that according to many does not necessarily serve the best interests of the students. This process of change has flawed in the fact that students currently enrolled in their higher education studies have been victims of its introduction, and these events have brought great distress to European students.

We urge the students not to take any private initiative corcerning this problem. We strongly request that you share your thoughts in the above mentioned meeting, and we will be glad to present your ideas and fight for them before the ruling bodies. Nothing will be achieved by acting in a reactive and aggressive manner; we need to be proactive and unified in our decisions.

Yours sincerely,
Rajiv Merchant

Welcome

<dc:subject>News Bulletin</dc:subject>

Welcome to the new and redesigned site for the Pécs Medical School English Program students on the web.
